Chapter 24

After James had led Kesha, Corinne, and Hind to a nearby clearing, he had the deer girl sit down on a moss-covered log that had fallen years ago.

James knelt down beside her, placing his rifle and his staff on the ground as he unslung his backpack.

He couldn’t help but stare at those beautiful, fur covered legs as he rummaged through the pack, searching for the first aid kit that they had brought with them.

“Here we are,” he said once he had found it.

Hind looked down at him with her big, hazel eyes, then broke out laughing.

James perked an eyebrow in confusion, although he could not keep a smile from his lips at the sound of Hind’s contagious laughter.

“What?” he said, half laughing himself. “What’s so funny?”

She grinned and leaned forward, offering him a generous look down her cleavage.

“Remember how we first met?” she asked softly. “It was just like this! Only the other way around, remember? I bound your wounds while you sat on an old log.”

James chuckled at the memory. “I guess that’s so,” he said. “Must be fate, right?”

Her hazel eyes warmed, and she nodded. “I think so,” she said.

Behind him, Corinne and Kesha chuckled softly.

“Have you been having many of these adventures with the other woodland inhabitants?” Corinne asked, one ginger eyebrow raised.

He laughed and waved it away as he fixed his eyes on her in a way that made the redhead blush.

“I’ve certainly been having adventures with you, my dear woodland inhabitant,” he said.

She bit her lip and returned his look with equal fire. “I guess that’s true,” he said.

Kesha grinned, covering her mouth.

James turned back to Hind, who still sat on the log with a cryptic smile on her lips, her furry legs dangling below her. He opened the small first-aid kit from his backpack and gently tended to the few scuffs on Hind’s legs.

It was a delight to touch her, to be so close to her. The wild scent of Hind drifted up his nostrils, and the feeling of her short but soft fur on his palms as he tended her wounds was a great delight.

He couldn’t help but wonder how it would feel if those legs wrapped around him…

Corinne and Kesha watched on in silence as he bound her wounds, curious about this strange creature they had encountered in the woods.

“What were you doing out here?” Hind asked as he worked, her big, hazel eyes still on him.

“Well,” James said as he worked on the bandages. “We came looking for you, in fact.”

Her eyes widened. “Looking for me?”

“Yeah,” he said. “Have you ever heard of Cernunnos?”

She blinked. “Yes,” she said, her voice almost a whisper. “He is a god. Some say the father to my kind.”

“Is he?” Corinne asked, always curious about the supernatural and magical things that had been in the shadows for most of her life.

Hind looked over at her, slightly cocking her head as she studied the redhead as if seeing her for the first time. Then she smiled broadly.
